May
Isn’t May a wonderful month for teachers and students! The flowers are blooming and the sun is growing warmer. There is anticipation in the air. The “light” at the end of the tunnel is growing larger and brighter as the gears shift for the last chapters in the textbooks and the final grading period of the year. The end is in sight, but it is not here yet, since there are many Dobie Miles to travel before the final day.
So, what else is happening during May 2010? First, Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for May 5th) is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Schools in the U. S. celebrate the cultural event mostly with festivals, food, music, and dancing. It a fun-filled celebration and focuses on all children learning and appreciating the culture of people with Mexican ancestry. Let’s celebrate!
Importantly, Sunday, May 9th, is Mother’s Day. Historically, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation on May 9, 1914, declaring the first national Mother’s Day. The day was originally set aside for American citizens to honor mothers whose sons had died in war. Over time, wearing the flower, the carnation, during church services has become representative of Mother’s Day. Now, wearing a red carnation is representative of one’s mother being alive, and the white one if the mother is deceased. Don’t forget to get your mother a gift on this day!
May 31, Memorial Day (observed), offers a tribute to the fallen heroes of our nation’s wars, over 1.1 million Americans. Memorials are offered to make sure those who sacrificed their lives are remembered, but also to “encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity.” (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs). Please remember to get out your flag at home and place small flags on the graves of deceased veterans to show your love and appreciation for their ultimate sacrifice.
The Communities In Schools organization continues to grow throughout the nation. President Obama specifically commented on Communities in Schools as a proven organization that impacts the dropout rate. He stated that he will “build on the efforts of places like Communities in Schools that make sure kids who are at risk of dropping out have one-on-one support.” President Obama’s remarks about CIS can be seen at http://communitiesinschools.org/media/highlights_details.php?rsid=11 .
